The Legend of SPUD MURPHY by Eoin Colfer

The Legend of Spud Murphy by Eoin Colfer

The Legend of Spud Murphy is a super book that I loved reading to my class at the start of the year. It is a short chapter book which is full of action and adventure from start to finish. Not only this, but there are are several underlying messages throughout. It builds on the idea that reading offers an escape into the imagination, and that judging people by rumour and hearsay usually results in false perception. We really did speed through this intriguing book, as it had us all laughing lots and helped me to build that initial bond with a new class…

Will has four brothers and it’s chaos in his house! If he’s not being teased by his big brother Marty about his beloved Action Man, then he has to deal with his rather annoying, younger brothers. When the summer holidays finally arrive, to further rub salt in to the wound, Will’s mother has the brilliant idea to pack Will and his older brother Marty off to the Library each day. The thought of having to spend their holidays in a library reading books couldn’t be further from their idea of fun. In their eyes, books are boring and dull and most certainly not wasting their time over. To make matters worse, like all the local children they have heard the haunting rumours of Spud Murphy – the terrifying librarian. If the rumours are to be believed then putting a foot wrong in front of Spud Murphy, would result in her using her dreaded gas-powered spud gun and nobody wants that – you only have to ask Ugly Frank how he got his nickname!

Despite Will and Marty being initially apprehensive about spending their well earned holidays in the library, they soon find out all isn’t quite what it seemed. Spud Murphy certainly is pretty terrifying – but trying to outwit her becomes an absorbing game in its own right. Will they outsmart her? Or… will the two of them inadvertently get sucked in to the world of exciting books the library has to offer?

Now don’t waste anymore time and find out the truth behind the legend that is… Spud Murphy!

A short book trailer to promote the book!
